Dr. Dakotah Lane
I was born and raised in Bellingham, WA and am an enrolled member of the Lummi Nation. While growing up I would help run my grandpa’s firework stand on and worked as a fisherman on my father’s purse seiner fishing for salmon in the Puget Sound. I went to University of Washington where I graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. During my time there I initially interned at IBM and AT&T Wireless, before being hired by AT&T to work as a Cisco Network analyst. But upon graduation I decided to switch careers and joined Peace Corps.
While working for Peace Corps, I served as a High School teacher in Malawi, Africa from 2003-2005. I helped manage a microcredit loan for a small fishing village to help increase the income of its participants. After completing my Peace Corps service, I attended medical school at Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York City from 2008-2013 followed by attending a Family Medicine residency in Halifax Family medicine residency in Daytona Beach, FL from 2013-2016. One of my more memorable moments during residency, was serving as a part of the emergency response team on the racetracks during Daytona 500 car races.
Since graduating I have been working as a physician and Medical Director at the Lummi Tribal Health Clinic which serves a tribal community of 5300+ and, along with a team of physicians, have led the robust public health response against COVID-19 including contact tracing and quarantine policies, participating in the Novavax vaccine clinical trial, & rolling out all three EUA approved vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson).

Claudia Rocio Rey, MD, FAAFP
In 2013, I joined a local family medicine practice in Bellingham, Washington, where I delivered many babies and cared for young families from the Lummi community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked as the medical director at the Upper Skagit Indian Tribal Clinic before joining the Lummi Tribal Health Center medical team in 2021. As a family medicine physician, I am passionate about connecting with and caring for my patients and their families. I have a particular interest in women’s health, pediatrics, chronic disease management, and preventative care. I am honored and humbled to be trusted by my patients to be part of their lives while guiding them in their health and medical decision-making.
When I’m not working, I enjoy being a mother to my two amazing daughters, a daughter to my caring mother, and spending time together as a family cooking, traveling, and going for bike rides together.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of the Lummi community while caring for you and your families.

Komal Shah, MD, FAAP
I am from a small town in western Massachusetts, born to parents who emigrated from India. I completed medical school at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and then pediatric residency training at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Drawn to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the opportunity to work at Lummi Tribal Health Center, I moved to Washington in August of 2018. I care for children from birth to young adulthood. It is a privilege to watch them learn and grow, and their energy and charm make it a joy to practice medicine. In addition to working in the main clinic, I provide medical services at the school-based health center at Lummi Nation School. Outside the clinic, I enjoy cooking, spending time with family and friends, and exploring local parks and trails with my husband, son, and our dog.

Dr. Elijah Kamermans
I bring a diverse and well-rounded background to my practice, shaped by experiences across multiple states and fields. Born in a small town in Canada, I’ve lived in New Mexico, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, California, and Alaska, with each place contributing to my perspective on medicine and community care.
I completed my residency in Family and Community Medicine at Penn State, where I served as Chief Resident and was actively involved in medical ethics and resident education. Before residency, I earned my Doctor of Medicine from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where I trained at several Indian Health Service (IHS) hospitals and clinics and participated in ethnographic research with refugees. My commitment to tribal health was reflected in my work with the Rural Urban Underserved Program, Native Health Initiative, and as a youth coach for Running Medicine, a program I helped expand through grant funding.
Before joining Lummi Nation Health Center, I practiced family medicine at Skagit Regional Health in Mount Vernon, WA. I also remain dedicated to medical education, mentoring students from the University of Washington and Washington State University.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy running, cycling, and practicing jiu-jitsu.

Dr. Hannah Gee
I grew up in large inner cities with Chinese immigrant communities. Initially, I avoided medicine because it meant something went awry, incomprehensible words, and intimidating doctors. The universe wanted me to face these fears and we went on a journey. I completed a master’s at Boston University, medical school at Drexel University, and residency at the University of California San Diego in Family Medicine and Psychiatry. I’ve worked with people from all walks of life, most meaningful were the stories and connections. I am passionate about the underserved, holistic approaches, and collaboration in care. My partner and I moved to Bellingham in 2022, we have two cats and a dog. I enjoy eating and being out in nature. I am so honored with the opportunity to be a part of this clinic!

Dr. Ellie Pearlman
I grew up in the Chicago area surrounded by a large extended family. Before pursuing a career in medicine, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience from Dartmouth College and a Master of Science in Engineering, Design, and Innovation from Northwestern University, where I focused on improving healthcare delivery through patient-centered design.
Inspired to work directly with patients, I went on to receive my medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout medical school, I remained engaged in healthcare design work through the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation, where I contributed to several projects, including efforts to ensure equitable and efficient vaccine distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I completed my Pediatric Residency training and Executive Resident year at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital as a member of the Alaska Track, and Field rural primary care training program during which I worked within the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
I’m excited and grateful to join the Lummi Nation Health Center as a Pediatrician. It’s an honor to care for children and families in the community, from infancy through adolescence.
Outside of work, you can find me cooking with my husband, spending time outside with friends and family, and knitting.

Dr. Reise Sample
Reise Sample, MD
I am from southeastern Michigan and went to college in rural Ohio. In college I trained as a community organizer in the Navajo Nation and South Bronx through AmeriCorps, where I learned from powerful communities united around shared goals. After college, I served in the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa from 2011 to 2013. In Togo, working with my community to build a primary care clinic, I witnessed how dramatically high-quality, community-based primary care can transform people’s health, which motivated me to become a primary care doctor. I went to Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx for medical school and completed my family medicine residency in the Harborview track at the University of Washington. In residency, I rotated at the Navajo Nation Medical Center where I learned from incredible family doctors, which inspired me to do a rotation here at the Lummi Nation Health Center. I loved it so much I came back for another rotation, and then applied to become a full-time doctor here! I’m so excited for the opportunity to work with the Lummi community and put down roots in the area.
As a family doctor, I am passionate about supporting the health of individuals and families over the lifespan and love getting to know and care for people and communities over many years. My background in community organizing drives me to be keenly aware of the many factors that influence our ability to be healthy and achieve our goals, and I am dedicated to connecting people to resources and opportunities for their health and wellbeing. My clinical interests include pediatrics, reproductive health, global health, addiction medicine, infections disease, and providing care that is affirming of people’s bodies, identities, and lived experiences.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy hiking, photography, gardening, and spending time with my partner and our two adorable cats.
